NASDAQ, similar EW ambiguity.

Nasdaq oct 2011 Nasdaq oct 2011 b

Just to belabor the point, here is another example of ambiguity. Both charts are of Nasdaq, just different time frames. Again there is the question which top is the top, in this case THE top seems to be the one in red as it is the highest one. But there is no 5-wave move leading into it and also wave 1 down (in red) is definitely not a textbook 5 wave movement. There is some overlap and wave 3 might even be the shortest, a definite no-no. But if we push on, the count in red suggests that we need one more drop (in a wedge as there again there is overlap) to complete 5 and with it the total of Wave 1. By the way, waves 2 and 4 also overlap by a rather large margin, also a no-no. Suppose one sticks to this interpretation than the next big move – once wave 5 is complete, would be Wave 2 up by about 50/60%.

  A better , and perhaps more correct – way of counting this would be to place a large, irregular  a-b-c flat in front of the top. The red top would actually be the top of wave b (always a 3-wave move!) and c would be the red wave 1. The top then becomes the blue top which actually fails to make a higher top than the red one but is at least at a higher point than the start of the irregular flat. Wave 1 down now becomes the blue count and even the mess in early August starts to make sense. The low point of wave one itself might be a miniscule failure, not surprising given the idiotic moves up and down at that time. From that low a very clear a-b-c correction occurs with every detail in accordance with the pragmatic rules. The c of the correction is a nice wedge as is normal and the whole thing retraces a very nice 62%. That is wave 2, ergo we are now in wave 3 and just the start of it and rather than go up we should drop sharply ! A completely opposite conclusion.

  To add a little confidence to any count it is good to look at the bigger picture, on the right. The big B-wave, stylized is clear enough. The next serious target normally is at the B level of the larger B-wave. So far we are not even close. This does not unequivocally favour one count over the other (neither fits particularly well) but ultimately the Nasdaq should make new lows and that fits best with the blue count. Because most readers do not care that much, if at all about EW niceties, the end result in English is that nothing is certain but we could have a precipitous drop any moment now as wave 3 fully develops.

DAX (Frankfurt) and NYA (New York), why counting is so difficult.

EW has some aspects that make people wonder in bewilderment how anybody could possible attach any predictive value to it at all. There are tops and “orthodox” tops and failed tops. There are extensions that out of seemingly nowhere add 4 waves to a sequence. There are “irregular” patterns where lower lows or higher highs do not count and the list goes on. For those interested here is an example;

DAX oct 5 2011 NYA oct 5 2011

On the left the DAX and on the right the NYSE index. Both have 3 tops at slightly different levels and the middle one is the highest but not necessarily THE top. Getting there certainly does not look like 5 waves and the first wave down on both is anything but a clear 5 waves. The Aug 9 action of 4 days of 400 points up and down obscures the picture, There is no clear wave 4 on DAX whereas there is a pretty clear one on the NYA. Wave 5 on both charts has the clear earmarks of a contracting diagonal, or in English, a wedge. However the position is different. On the DAX the wedge hugs the lower trend line, whereas on the NYA the wedge is further to the right so one could be wave 5 of 3 and the other wave 5 of the entire wave one, different degrees! The DAX made its low almost a month ago and the NYA just a few days ago, yet we are supposed to believe that the world problems are now coming from Europe.

Looking superficially at both charts one might be inclined to say that they are essentially the same, and they are but the implications are quite different for the next move!

LUN OCT 2011

We have warned at least twice that this stock was a sell at around $9 or so. The actual high was $9.28. This one had two problems going against it. First a pretty well perfect B-wave (this it had in common with three or four dozen other stocks). Secondly it went to the altar twice but did not quite make it, joining the long list of failed take-overs mergers, BCE, X, POT etc.

The stock is now down roughly 65/70% and it does not look complete even if a nice bounce is in the cards. See also today’s copper entry. Both are in a fourth wave.

We were premature in assuming this might be a sell at about $60 (pre-split). It just kept going. Its ascend is quite remarkable staying inside a very narrow channel for 3 years. (see previous blog) This is a stock that attracts momentum players and of course it is considered a “safe” , regulated business. Momentum plays go on un till they stop. This climb started in ‘92 from $5, that is 10 years of non-stop going up. I think it has come to an end.
